Laikipia is one of Kenya’s great wildlife regions, and it is very different from the busy parks further south. Here, community conservancies like Lekurruki let you explore on foot, meet the people who protect the land and watch wildlife without a convoy of vehicles. Here are our favourite things to do at Tassia Lodge.
1. Watch wildlife at the waterhole
The lodge looks straight down on a waterhole, and all kinds of wildlife come to drink almost every day: elephants, zebras, giraffes, kudus, elands, buffaloes, warthogs and plenty of birds. The dry season is the busiest time. Guests have counted around 30 elephants at once from the deck.
2. Go on a guided walking safari
Walking is the highlight of Lekurruki. Our community guides read tracks, point out medicinal plants and lead you safely through the bush. Nothing beats seeing Africa on foot.
3. Explore the Mukogodo Forest
Just minutes away, the Mukogodo Forest is one of the oldest dryland forests in East Africa and the ancestral home of the Yaaku people. Look for butterflies, forest birds, rare plants and the caves the Yaaku once lived in.
4. Scramble along dry riverbeds
Sandy luggas wind through the conservancy and make for adventurous walks, with elephant tracks, hidden rock pools and plenty of birdlife along the way.
5. Meet the Yaaku community
The Yaaku are an indigenous people known for their deep knowledge of the forest and their tradition of honey and beekeeping. A cultural visit, arranged on request, supports the families who own the lodge.
6. Bush breakfast or bush dinner
Our team sets up a table in the riverine forest or on a clifftop for a meal in the wild. It’s one of the moments guests talk about long after they’ve gone home.
7. Sundowners and yoga on the rooftop
The rooftop deck has wide views over the Lengishu plains and Lossos hills. It is perfect for sunrise yoga, an afternoon nap or a cold drink as the sun goes down.
8. Spot rare wildlife
Lekurruki is part of an important wildlife corridor bordering Il Ngwesi, Leparua and Ol Donyiro. Look out for Grevy’s zebra, greater and lesser kudu, eland, giraffe, wild dogs, leopard and cheetah, plus a huge variety of birds.
9. Disconnect completely
There is no mobile signal at Tassia, only Wi-Fi in the main lounge. Days slow down. You’ll find yourself watching the waterhole for hours and, at night, more stars than you’ve ever seen.
