Laikipia sits right on the equator on the northern slopes of Mount Kenya, so temperatures barely change through the year: warm days in the mid-twenties Celsius and cool nights. What does change is the rain, and the rain decides where the wildlife goes. Here’s how the year plays out at Tassia Lodge in Lekurruki Conservancy.
Quick answer: when is the best time to visit?
For the best wildlife viewing, come in the dry seasons: July to October and January to February. Water is scarce in the wider landscape, so elephants, zebras, kudus and other animals gather at the waterholes, including the one directly below the Tassia deck. For quieter stays, lush scenery and lower rates, the green season (April to May and November to early December) is excellent value.
January to March: short dry season
After the short rains the land dries out quickly. Wildlife concentrates around water and the skies are clear for photography and stargazing. January to March falls in our high season, so book early.
April to May: long rains (green season)
Afternoon showers turn the plains green and bring out the birdlife, flowering plants and newborn animals. Roads can be muddy, so a 4WD is essential, but you get the lodge almost to yourself and the lowest rates of the year.
June to October: long dry season
This is classic safari time in Kenya. The bush thins out, visibility is excellent and the waterhole below the lodge becomes the busiest spot in the conservancy. From the pool and lounge, guests watch elephants, zebras, giraffes, kudus and many other animals drinking and bathing. Expect cold early mornings, so pack a warm layer for walks.
November to mid-December: short rains
Short, sharp showers refresh the landscape. It’s a quiet, beautiful time to visit, perfect for walking safaris in the Mukogodo Forest and photography in soft light.
Peak season: Christmas and New Year
From 11 December to 5 January the lodge fills with families and friends celebrating in the wild. With only seven rooms, this period books out early. Consider exclusive use of the whole lodge for a private festive break.
